ENDOCRINE CHANGES WITH AGEING AND THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

During aging many endocrine systems undergo anatomic and functional changes at different times. In the extremly old, also loss of muscle strength resulting in fragility becomes the limiting factor for an individual’s chances of living an independent life. During the last century the number of people over 65 years of age has increased more than four-fold in the industrialized countries and by the year 2030 might account for 20% of the population. We may apply hormonal replacement therapies for ageing people to increase quality of life and survival. This review focuses on hormonal problems related to ageing and current hormonal therapies.
