BRADYARRHYTHMIAS AND PACEMAKER THERAPY

Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kardiyoloji Anabilim Dalı, SİVAS Starting with the first implantation of pacemakers (PM) in 1958 for the treatment of bradyarrhythmias, their use is rapidly increasing due to the advancement in PM technology and the enlargement of their indications. At present, more than 80% of PM applications is performed on the elderly patients over 65 years old. Facing with the enlargement of the indications, especially in the elderly patients, it is still controversial which mode the most appropriate is, whether PMs influence morbidity and mortality rates in various indications, and for the issues of ethical economical gains. Because, contradictory data are obtained from the studies investigating these issues. This review plans to evaluate the PM therapy in elderly patients in full detail.
